Education apps trade earnings for trust and focus

Language courses, revision tools, flashcards, coding tutors and early-learning apps serve users who are trying to concentrate. A study session has momentum, and an ad that breaks it can undo the habit the app exists to build. The category is discounted to 0.85 of the baseline in our estimates. Part of that reflects the audience: students have little spending power, and many apps serve children, where restrictions sharply limit what advertisers can do.

If any of your users are children, the rules change completely. Store family programmes require certified ad networks, rule out personalised advertising to children and limit the kinds of ads that may appear, while laws such as COPPA in the United States add their own duties. Contextual ads usually pay less than targeted ones, so earnings in a children's app can fall further below the benchmark than the multiplier alone suggests. The guide to ads in kids' apps covers what is allowed. For adult learners, rewarded video is the cleanest fit: a repaired streak, a bonus practice round or an unlocked review set.

Interstitials belong at the end of a lesson, never in the middle, and banners should stay well clear of answer buttons, where a stray tap costs the learner a question. Seasonality follows the academic year. Activity climbs with the new school year in September and again before exams, then eases through the summer holidays. Language apps often see a January rush as people make resolutions, although ad prices are at a low ebb by then.

The Google Mobile Ads SDK goes into your build, and you use Google's test ad units while developing so your own taps never count as live traffic. Before the first payout you verify your address with a PIN that arrives by post, then add tax and bank details. Our AdMob revenue calculator shows what your own traffic could earn before you start.

Practical tips

  • Decide early whether children are part of your audience and configure every network for that before launch.
  • Show interstitials only after a completed lesson, never between questions.
  • Offer rewarded practice rounds or streak repairs instead of selling attention in the middle of study.

About Google AdMob

Google AdMob is Google's own app network, and alongside AppLovin MAX it is one of only two options in our tables that offer all five mobile formats, app open and native included. Its central Tier 1 Android estimates of about $12.00 for rewarded and $8.00 for interstitials, with blended fill near 88%, make it a dependable baseline rather than the top bidder.

All figures come from our benchmark tables: Android eCPMs by tier, category or niche multipliers, modelled fill and the iOS multiplier. They are estimates for planning, not quotes.
