Assumptions behind the estimate

The calculator turns sessions into pageviews, then multiplies by an RPM, which is the amount earned per 1,000 pageviews. The starting RPM comes from the table below, and it assumes four ad units per page at 60% viewability.

  • AdSense is modelled at roughly $7.00 RPM for Tier 1 readers, $3.00 for Tier 2 and $0.80 for Tier 3, before any niche or layout adjustment.
  • Niche scales that base figure, from 0.65x for news and entertainment up to 1.9x for finance and business. The General setting sits at 0.8x.
  • More ad units help with diminishing returns. Going from four units per page to nine lifts the estimate by about half, not by 125%.
  • Viewability moves the result in proportion to the 60% baseline, so a page that is 75% viewable earns about a quarter more than one at 60%.
  • Display, in-article and sticky units are on by default. Interstitials add a modest uplift, and outstream video is not part of the AdSense model here, so switching it on changes nothing.
  • The low and high figures are 0.7x and 1.35x of the central estimate, which covers seasonal swings and auction noise.

Google's revenue share, invalid-traffic filtering and consent effects are already folded into the benchmark RPMs, so you don't need to subtract them. The full method is on the methodology page, and website RPM by niche explains why the same traffic can earn two or three times more in a different topic.

Example scenarios

Three example sites show how the inputs interact. Each row uses its own niche, traffic location and layout, so compare the columns and not just the totals.

Three example inputs and the monthly estimate the engine returns
ScenarioInputsMonthly estimate
Weekend recipe blogA hobby food site with a mixed audience and a light three-unit layout.Food & Recipes, 20,000 sessions a month at 1.6 pages each (32,000 pageviews), Balanced global mix, 3 ads per page, 55% viewable, formats: Display (banner), In-article / native, Sticky / anchor$101$71 to $136
Gadget review siteA steady technology blog with mostly US and UK readers and a standard layout.Technology, 80,000 sessions a month at 1.9 pages each (152,000 pageviews), Tier 1 lean, 4 ads per page, 62% viewable, formats: Display (banner), In-article / native, Sticky / anchor$808$565 to $1,090
Daily news and entertainmentA high-volume site with a global audience, extra ad units and an interstitial.News & Entertainment, 400,000 sessions a month at 2.4 pages each (960,000 pageviews), Balanced global mix, 5 ads per page, 58% viewable, formats: Display (banner), In-article / native, Sticky / anchor, Interstitial$2,438$1,706 to $3,291

Notice that the largest site does not earn the most per pageview. A low-paying niche and a broad audience pull its RPM down, and extra ad units only partly make up the gap.

Getting paid by Google AdSense

Typical terms

Threshold
$100 balance (a PIN is mailed at $10)
Cycle
Monthly, around the 21st to 26th
Methods
Bank transfer (EFT), wire in some countries

AdSense pays once a month, usually between the 21st and the 26th, for the previous month, and only when your balance has reached the payment threshold. At the time of writing that is $100. A PIN is mailed to your address once earnings reach $10, and you must enter it before payments can start, so request it early if you live somewhere with slow post.

AdSense shares its payment system with AdMob. The threshold, PIN step, tax details and common delay causes are the same, so the AdMob payment guide applies almost line for line.

Payment is normally by bank transfer, with wire in some countries. If your bank is outside the US, read receiving ad payouts abroad before you set up your account, because the account you choose affects fees and exchange rates. Check the current terms in the AdSense help centre before relying on any date.

Approval comes before the maths

AdSense has no traffic minimum, but it does review the site. Thin pages, copied text, missing contact or privacy pages and a half-built navigation are common reasons for a rejection. Apply through AdSense when the site has a body of original articles you would be happy to show a stranger, not on day one.

Once approved, the program rules matter as much as the earnings. Read how Google describes how it uses data from partner sites and make sure your privacy notice and consent banner match what the ad code actually does.

Auto ads or hand-placed units

Auto ads are the fastest way to get a first estimate into reality. They test placements for you, but they can also push content around and cause layout shift. Hand-placed units give you control, which is useful once you know where readers actually stop scrolling.

Whichever you pick, watch cumulative layout shift. A page that jumps when an ad loads annoys readers and can cost you search traffic, which is the bigger income source. Website ad formats compared covers the trade-offs in more detail.

Google AdSense FAQ

How many pageviews does $1,000 a month take on AdSense?

Divide $1,000 by your RPM and multiply by 1,000. At a blended RPM of $5, which is plausible for a mostly Tier 1 audience in a middling niche, that is 200,000 pageviews. At $2.50 it is 400,000. Use the sliders to find your own RPM first.

Why does my report show a different RPM from the estimate?

AdSense reports page RPM and session RPM separately, and traffic mix, season and ad layout all move them. The calculator uses benchmark averages, so your own report will sit above or below it. Treat the 0.7x to 1.35x range as the honest answer, and see eCPM in plain English for how the metrics relate.

Is it worth switching to Mediavine once I reach $5,000 a year in ad revenue?

Often, but not automatically. Mediavine's main programme asks for that much annual ad revenue, and its Journey programme takes smaller sites with 1,000 Tier 1 sessions in 30 days. Managed networks tend to pay a higher RPM, with stricter layout rules and slower payments. Run the same inputs through the Mediavine calculator, then read the AdSense or Mediavine decision guide.

Does adding more ads per page always raise earnings?

No. The model gives each extra unit a smaller gain than the last, and real pages can go backwards when ads crowd the text, slow loading or lower viewability. Four to six well-placed units usually beat ten crowded ones.

Does where my readers live matter more than how many there are?

Often it does. Move the location slider from the left to the right and the Tier 1 share rises from about 5% to about 70% of readers, which lifts RPM roughly threefold or more. A smaller US audience can out-earn a much larger one in Tier 3 regions.
