Ezoic Explained: Layout Testing, Speed and RPM
How Ezoic tests layouts on live readers, what it takes to join, what moves its RPM and how to read EPMV.
5 min read · Updated
Ezoic sits in an unusual spot. It runs the kind of automated auction and layout testing that premium managed networks reserve for much bigger sites, and it has a published bar for new sites that is higher than it used to be. For a site that clears it, that can be the first step up from AdSense.
The catch is that Ezoic changes how your site works more than a simple ad code does. It tests layouts on your real visitors, it adds its own scripts, and its reports use a metric that is easy to misread.
This guide explains how the testing works, what it takes to join, the formats on offer, what moves your RPM, how to think about site speed, and how payouts work. All figures are estimates from our benchmark tables, the same ones behind the revenue calculator. Ezoic changes its products and terms, so confirm the details on Ezoic's site.
How Ezoic's testing works
With most ad setups you choose where ads go and leave them there. Ezoic works the other way round. You mark many possible positions on your pages, which Ezoic calls placeholders, and its system decides which ones to fill for each visitor.
It does this by testing combinations on live traffic. One visitor might see three ads, another five, in different positions. Ezoic measures revenue alongside engagement signals such as time on site and pages per visit, and over time it favours layouts that earn more without driving readers away.
Two things follow. First, the early weeks are noisy, because the system is still learning and some of the layouts it tries will be poor. Judge Ezoic on a full month or more, not the first few days. Second, you give up some direct control over what each reader sees. You can still disable placeholders and set limits, but the day-to-day choices are automated.
Getting in
Since February 2026, Ezoic's requirements page has asked new sites for about 250,000 monthly users. Sites already monetizing with Ezoic before then are grandfathered, and smaller sites can apply to the Ezoic Incubator. That is a much higher bar than Raptive's 25,000 monthly pageviews or Journey by Mediavine's 1,000 Tier 1 sessions in 30 days, so a small blog is usually better served elsewhere first.
Meeting the traffic bar does not end the review. Expect Ezoic to check that your content is original and that the site follows advertiser policies. Requirements change, so read the current terms before applying.
How it connects to your site
Ezoic has offered several ways to integrate, at the time of writing:
- Changing your domain's nameservers so traffic routes through its network, which gives it the most control and its speed features.
- A WordPress plugin for sites on that platform.
- A JavaScript integration, where you add its scripts and placeholders to your own templates.
The nameserver route touches your DNS, so note your current records before switching. Whichever route you choose, Ezoic will ask you to update your ads.txt so its demand partners are authorised to sell your inventory.
Formats it supports
In our tables Ezoic supports all five web formats: display, in-article or native, sticky, outstream video and interstitial. Our calculator treats display, native and sticky as the reference mix. Turning on outstream video adds 40% to the reference RPM in our model and interstitial adds 15%, which is why the same network can show very different numbers depending on which formats you enable. Website ad formats compared covers what each costs in reader experience.
What our tables say about RPM
Here is Ezoic against its neighbours, at our reference setup of four ads per page and 60% viewability.
| Network | Entry bar | Tier 1 RPM | Tier 2 RPM | Tier 3 RPM |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AdSense | None | $7.00 | $3.00 | $0.80 |
| Ezoic | 250,000 monthly users for new sites | $9.50 | $4.00 | $1.10 |
| Monumetric | 10,000 pageviews | $10.50 | $4.40 | $1.20 |
| Mediavine | $5,000 annual ad revenue | $17.00 | $7.00 | $2.00 |
In Tier 1, Ezoic's baseline is about 36% above AdSense. For a general-interest site (our niche multiplier is 0.8) that is $7.60 per thousand pageviews against $5.60. At 300,000 monthly pageviews, a size near the new entry bar, the gap is roughly $600 a month: $2,280 against $1,680. The Ezoic calculator and the AdSense calculator let you run your own numbers.
What moves your Ezoic RPM
Where readers are
Audience location matters more than anything else in our data. Ezoic's Tier 3 RPM is under an eighth of its Tier 1 figure. A site with mostly US and UK readers will see very different results from one with a worldwide audience.
Your niche
Our niche multipliers run from 0.65 for news and entertainment to 1.9 for finance and business. A finance site on Ezoic at Tier 1 would sit near $18.05 per thousand pageviews before any format changes. RPM by niche explains why.
Layout and density
Because Ezoic is testing layouts, more placeholders give it more room to find good combinations. More active ads also cost speed and patience, so set sensible limits on how many can show at once.
The time of year
Advertiser budgets peak in the final quarter and reset in January. Read preparing for Q4 and why ad revenue drops in January so a seasonal swing does not look like a broken setup.
Reading EPMV next to RPM
Ezoic's dashboard leads with EPMV, earnings per thousand visitors, rather than page RPM. A visitor can view several pages, so EPMV is always higher than RPM for the same site. At 1.5 pages per visit, a page RPM of $9.50 equals an EPMV of $14.25.
Convert one to the other before comparing Ezoic with AdSense or any network that reports per pageview. Otherwise Ezoic will look better than it is.
Site speed
Every ad network adds weight, and a testing layer adds some more. Watch your Core Web Vitals before and after joining, especially layout shift from ads that load without reserved space. Google's guidance on Cumulative Layout Shift is a good reference.
Ezoic has offered its own speed tooling, such as caching and image optimisation, mainly through the nameserver integration. It can help, but measure it yourself rather than assume. Ads and Core Web Vitals covers what to check.
Getting paid
Ezoic's minimum payout is low and set by the payment method you choose. It pays monthly, on net terms of 30 days or more, by PayPal or bank transfer. These are typical terms, so confirm them in your own account. If you live outside the US, read receiving ad payouts abroad.
Is Ezoic right for your site?
Ezoic suits a site that has outgrown basic AdSense, either because it clears the new-site bar or was already monetizing with Ezoic before February 2026, where the owner is willing to give a testing system a few months and keep an eye on speed. It suits less well if you want full manual control of every placement.
When you do reach a premium network's bar, compare again: AdSense or Mediavine covers that step, and the home page comparison shows all six web networks for your traffic. For how Ezoic's auction compares with running your own, see header bidding for publishers.
